Fluency

Reading unlocks doors and helps us understand our world.

At Ireby, we believe that all our children need to leave us as capable and confident readers able to decode and engage fluently with complex texts; ready for the world beyond our school. The ability to read to proficiently also supports our Christian vision, 'created to do good' Ephesians 2:10.

As children become confident applying their phonic knowledge, so we focus more on their ability to read with fluency.

What is reading fluency?

Reading fluency can be defined as reading with accuracy, automaticity and prosody. When pupils read fluently, their cognitive resources can be redirected from focusing on decoding and onto comprehending a text. For this reason, fluency is sometimes described as a bridge from word recognition to comprehension.
